Ruppert; Walgreens; Penn and Teller; Tomatoes; Debt Collection; Truman; Hospitals; Insanity; Tax Free Bonds; Skaters Heaven; Migraines; Meat

Overcast.. thunderstorms will be here shortly.

Groucho Marx said: "I intend to live forever, or die trying."

01.  Ruppert gave up .. for now.

Ruppert Murdock decided to "pull" his offer to buy Time Warner and create the world's largest media conglomerate.  The biggest hindrance was probably TW's Board's refusal to make friends with FOX.

02.  *Walgreen .. drops plans to abandon U.S. Taxes?

Spies report that Walgreen has changed its mind about a move overseas.  It probably took a good look at a drop in its stock price after a public outcry.  Now, they would like to remain a "typical American company."

03.  Fool US

I just saw that Penn and Teller Fool Us will be shown on American TV tonight.  I loved that show when it was on the BBC and you could watch it on YouTube.  If you haven't seen the show, you are in for a great treat when you do.  Good magicians do their tricks in an attempt to fool the experts .. namely Penn and Teller.  A few do.

04.  Our Farm

Yesterday, we picked our 6th and 7th red tomato and there are 20 or more green ones on the vine. Also, there is a fat yellow squash getting bigger every day in the sun on our back deck.  Our cherry tomato plants have "mushroomed" as have all of our potted flowers, thanks to my daughter, Diane.

05.  Debt Collection

Diane Rheem has a bunch of debt collection experts on one of her shows today.  Debt collection agencies pay around 3 cents per dollar for debts that banks and companies no longer want to stay involved with.  Unfortunately, people who companies know will  not be able to keep up payments, are lured into buying expensive products, and students are stuck with big student loan bills these days.

Remember to get your free credit report..now.  You are entitled to one from each of the three credit agencies per year, and it would be to your advantage to get yours, because experts agree that there is an average of at least one error on a credit report for one in four persons.

06.  Presidential Wisdom?

"Memories are short; appetites for power and glory are insatiable.  Old tyrants depart. New ones take their place.  It is all very baffling and trying."  Harry S. Truman

07.  Hospital Safety?

Consumer Reports for September 2014 says that "... 440,000 Americans die each year as a result of preventable harm that happens while they are hospitalized."  Are we a third world country?  What's going on?

08.  Has the world gone mad?

Two Virginia residents beat up their roommate and then tried to slice the tattoo off of his arm. When that didn't work, they set fire to the arm and tried to burn it off.  These geniuses are members of a cult  called Juggalos, related to the rap-metal duo Insane Clown Posse.

09.  Tax Free Bond Issuance

Today, a tax free bond announcement  was made for the Lutheran Village at Millers Grant.  This is the sister continuing care organization to Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, Maryland.. which is where I live.   The anticipated yield is 6.75% to maturity at 7/1/2044.  Since I know nothing at all about bonds, and since I won't be around in 2044, I will pass on this opportunity.

10.  Skaters' Heaven

Westminster Skaters Park reopened today after a $300,000 renovation that took a year and a half.  Maybe this will keep some of the kids from getting into mischief.

11.  What causes your migraines?

John Blinke writes in the Mensa magazine, based on a Science News (online) article by Lee Helms entitled: "Head Agony:"  "What causes migraine headaches, aside from spouses and bosses?  The brain doesn't feel pain, so the headaches must be somewhere else.  Medical experts have blamed dilated blood vessels near the brain.  Brain scans have now shown waves of low blood flow traveling across the cortex during a migraine.  But the latest opinion is that misfiring neurons in the brain stem are the basic cause.  Whatever the detailed reasons are for the neuron misbehavior, the problem is ultimately genetic, so blame your parents (not in-laws)."

12.  Flesh Eaters

I read somewhere recently that human intelligence began only when mankind started eating meat.  So, are all vegetarians dummies?  I doubt it. But, if man needed meat, he had to develop the predatory intelligence of other animals like the lion and bear.  That could have caused our brains to grow larger, right?
