Penguin Pickers; Corn is High; Religious Views; Congress on Vacation; Spider Man; Chokehold; Fist Bump; Robots; Impotence; Hair; Guns; Football

Warm, sunny Summer day.

01.  Penguin Pickers

Penguin Random House is looking for "Pickers" and "Packers."  Some part time positions are available for Saturday and Sunday mornings.. and some full-time spots are available for during the week.  I think that people who work there get some free books as well as a decent wage.

They also need fork lift drivers.  Once, on a visit to the warehouse facility in Westminster, I watched as an operator expanded his fork lift so that he could reach books on pallets which were at least 40 feet up in the air.  Amazing manipulation on a dangerous contraption.

Perhaps Peter Piper will apply to be a part-time Penguin Picker, a perfect position for a packing pro.

02.  The Corn is now High as an Elephant's Eye

The Carroll County Times reports that corn is now 76 inches high and this week vegetable harvesting will be underway, as well as the cutting of hay.  Hay will be auctioned for from $1 to $4.90 per bale, depending on type.  Looks like a good year for our farmers.

03.  Religion .. Sign

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown, Maryland has an interesting outside sign this week.  "Jesus is my rock and my name is on the roll."  The message is very clever and meaningful for religious people in Carroll County; however, don't let Inner City kids read it, because it contains slang elements that can't be mentioned here.

04.  Religion .. Note to Jeffrey Peters

Jeffrey, I always read your religious columns every month and usually don't have a problem with what  you say.  However, today, you stated that secularism and atheism are trying to "snuff out the rights of all Christians."  You also equated the people who do not believe with you in the doctrine of the Catholic Church to "radical Muslims."

I admire the fact that you are pursuing a College Education, but to become really educated, one must open one's mind to other ways of thinking, perhaps not to accept other views, but to be a bit more tolerant of other views, even the Jesuits agree to that, and certainly the new Pope feels that way, at least I hope he does.

05.  Congress.. Have a nice Vacation!

The House went on a "not well-deserved" vacation Friday after passing a "go nowhere" immigration bill that would go against the George W. Bush bill that provides hearings for migrant children.  Same old stuff.. Why can't the public recognize the do-nothings in the House and Senate and Vote Them Out!

06.  Super Hero?

New  Yorker, Junior Bishop (alias Spider Man) got mad when a mother on Times Square gave him $1 instead of $5 for taking a picture of him with her kid, and exploded in a rather unseemly (for a super hero) manner.. his cursing tirade finally ended up by him punching a cop.  (Not a good idea.)

07.  Evil Returns

A 68 year old Illinois man who uses a portable oxygen tank, admitted to putting sewing needles into packaged meats at a grocery store.  This "sterling" citizen was not able to explain why he did it.

Do you remember when some nutcakes put razor blades in Trick or Treat candies?  The Devil must have made these people do it!

08.  *Garner #2

A New York Medical Examiner has finally ruled that the police chokehold was the means for Mr. Garner's demise, and has ruled it a homicide.  Al Sharpton has now gotten involved in this case.

09,  Tidbits from WWDTM

This week's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me show mentioned some interesting things:

a.  A study has shown that the fist-bump is much safer health-wise than shaking hands.

b.  South Koreans are setting up robots to watch certain baseball games because fans have lost interest .

c. The Chinese have now found that setting a men's crotch on fire cures impotence!

10.  Kindness from a Child

A 6 year old British child with long blond hair, learned about children with cancer from a video and asked her parents to have her hair cut off to be made into a wig for an unfortunate child.  At last... there may be hope for this world!

11.  But a Child is Gone

In Baltimore, Maryland, this last weekend, a drive-by shooting took place.. shots fired into a group of people resulted in shots being fired back... and a three year old child is dead.   Now.. maybe I need to rethink my thought about hope for this world.

Guns.. guns.. and more guns.  Today, Mr. Brady died.  He was the guy who got shot during the assassination attempt years ago on Ronald Reagan.  He tried for years to get some sense about guns into our violent society.  May he rest in peace.

12.  But we want our Football Players to be Rough and Tough

Steve Almond writes in the Daily Beast about football players beating up women and getting small or no punishment.  His final words appear to be right on the nose:  "If  you're disgusted that the NFL employs so many men who beat and sexually assault women, stop paying them to entertain you!"

1. I drove a forklift at that lumber company I worked for; it was a lot of fun - one of the few things I liked about that job.

3. That's better than the "If you died today, would you wake up in Heaven or Hell" signs that have been all up and down 140 lately.

4. As a secular atheist, I can honestly say I'm not trying to snuff out religion or the rights of Christians. Just remember, your rights end at my nose.

9a. I'm officially going to fist bumps outside of work.

10. I saw this - it was very touching :)

11. I didn't hear about James Brady passing away; I'm sorry to hear it - even more sad that he didn't get to see much reform on gun violence.

12. Done.
